Free Downloadable PDF: To make this lesson even easier, we've included a free PDF worksheet that you can download and follow in the classroom. It's a handy guide for teachers to ensure a smooth and enjoyable art session with the kids.
Balloons are Always Fun:
Today, we will create some colourful and unique artwork using balloons as our painting tools! This is a fantastic way to let children explore colours and textures in a fun and unconventional way. Kids will love how the balloons make exciting patterns, and the best part is that it's so easy to do.
Flowers & Butterflies: Another idea is to balloon paint an entire sheet, as shown. Once dry, cut into shapes and stick onto a painted background.
What You'll Need:
Canvas panels or thick card
Balloons (small size)
Star Tempera paint (various colours)
Paper plates (for the paint)
Newspaper (to protect your workspace)
Steps:
Prepare Your Workspace: Spread out the newspaper to keep things tidy, then place your canvas panel or card on top.
Set Up the Paints: Pour a small amount of each colour of paint onto the paper plates. Make sure there's enough space for the balloon to dip into.
Inflate the Balloon: Blow up the balloon to a small size, just big enough to handle easily. Tie it off securely.
Start Painting: Dip the balloon into one of the paint colours, then gently dab it onto the canvas or card. Continue dipping into different colours and dabbing on the canvas. Watch as the colours blend and create vibrant patterns.
Experiment with Patterns: Keep dabbing with the balloon until you're happy with the design. You can make patterns through the middle or around the edges, depending on your preference.
Drying Time: Set the artwork aside to dry completely.
HINT: For a different approach to painting, use pre-painted backgrounds and Five Star Stencils with the balloon painting.
For older artists, add a "squirt" of Five Star Silicone Spray to give a different effect of
"cells" forming in the colours.
Extra Fun Ideas:
Try using a pre-painted background or add Five Star Stencils to create different effects with your balloon painting.
Once your balloon painting is dry, cut out shapes like flowers or butterflies and stick them onto another painted background for a layered artwork.
Balloon painting is a delightful way to mix play with art. It's perfect for younger children and can be adapted for more experienced artists by experimenting with different techniques. Have fun, and let the creativity flow!
